Jane has been in her post since September 2007 and is enjoying the challenge of a service which brings huge benefits to children with long term health conditions and their families.
She has many years experience working as a children’s nurse within both hospital and community settings in Wolverhampton, including working within a discharge co-ordinator team. Through her experience she has gained a growing awareness of the huge pressures that affect families with children with complex health needs. Families who are already under significant pressure coping with the day to day emotional, physical, and financial strains of caring for a child with long term health problems, need additional practical support when their child has hospital admissions.
Her role is to provide a community nursing service for children throughout Oxfordshire and offer education, advice and support to their families and carers. She provides family-centred care for the sick child at home by empowering the family and acting as an advocate. And she takes the lead in promoting improved discharge planning so reducing the length of hospital stay.
“I love the satisfation of seeing the families going home with all the relevant services to support them. Being able to talk to the families as the WellChild nurse and provide that personal contact is great. Sometimes parents will be so scared - they don't know what they will be faced with when they go home. Meeting me helps to relieve some of the stress so they don't feel so isolated. ”
