Hadiya's story

picture of Hadiya with his brother and sisterSix year old Hadiya from Bristol is a happy and vibrant young girl who loves spending time with her family.  Hadiya has Glutaric Aciduria which causes a build up of glutaric acid resulting in severe brain damage and hypotonia (floppiness).  She is unable to communicate verbally or move independently and so requires constant care and is wheelchair dependant.

Hadiya was unable to fully enjoy her home life because the family garden was overgrown and on a slope and so she could not get into it in her wheelchair.

In summer 2008 a Helping Hands team of volunteers from HSBC cleared and levelled the garden, created a soft play area, and painted a colourful mural on the garden wall.  The garden was transformed into an attractive space suited to Hadiya’s needs which she is now able to enjoy with her brother and sister.

Hadiya’s father said: “My overall experience of working with WellChild was amazing and unbelievable and I cannot think how it could be improved.  Hadiya will now be able to access the whole of the garden where before she could only watch her brother and sister playing.”
